-- Green Landfill Initiatives --

Initiatives to completely eliminate compostable organics out of the San Diego Area Landfill have been in discussion and are hoped to be in place by 2012...

Landfilling of biodegradable waste (including food, paper products, garden & yard waste, agricultural waste) is a huge contributor to global warming. Recent studies show that methane gas which is created from organic materials in the landfill, is as much as 72 times more destructive than CO2.

According to the Zero Waste San Diego Group - Landfills are the number one source of human-caused methane in the United States and emit the greenhouse gas equivalent of 20 percent of our country’s coal-fired power plants every year. These organics are a valuable resource that build healthy soil, rather than using petroleum-based fertilizers & pesticides to aid unhealthy crops and forcing them to produce inferior fruits, we need to grow healthy soil first… providing everything the plant needs naturally. And let us not forget that healthy soils are capable of holding twice the carbon stocks of plants. Meaning this can be a big resource for governments in the form of carbon sinks.

Composting, whatever the method we might choose as a community, individual or as a society – it is truly the quickest and cheapest way to immediately reduce our community’s greenhouse gas emissions and improve the health of soils.
