According to a press release by Tom Fudge, San Diego's Miramar Landfill is now experimenting with compostable cups, plates, stir-sticks and cutlery in their composting program. Apparently these items, depending on their composition, can break down in as little as one week. These items can be made from bamboo, corn, potato, wood and other renewable resources.
